The WIMBY Pledge: Welcome in My Back Yard!

I affirm that I welcome people of all walks of life in my neighborhood and community, and value human diversity in all its forms. I cherish my right to live according to my own values and beliefs, and respect the rights of others to do the same. I am opposed to and will try to find ways to speak out against:

* housing discrimination and other forms of discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, creed, political belief, age, national origin or ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, socio-economic status or marital status.
* domestic violence and verbal and physical abuse, especially against children
* racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic acts
* the “not in my backyard” attitude towards group and foster-care homes; homeless shelters; and public, cooperative and subsidized housing
* ethnic intimidation
* violence towards gay males, lesbians and transgendered or transsexual individuals
* anti-immigrant actions and prejudice

I recognize that I may also be affected by prejudices and stereotypes of various kinds developing during my life. Over the next year I will try to better understand and reverse such attitudes in order to ensure that I do not act upon them. Also, over the next twelve months I intend to exercise my rights of free speech and political expression by keeping the W I M B Y sign in my window, in order to increase consciousness in my neighborhood and community about the principles of this pledge.
